Mayor Emano opposes creation of new cities

[AdSense01] City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano today expressed his strong opposition to the Senate’s plan of approving today the creation of 10 new cities as this will greatly affect the capability of existing local government units to deliver basic social services to their respective constituents.

Mayor Emano disclosed during the regular flag raising ceremony at City Hall this morning that the recent move by the House of Representatives and the Senate will have serious effects on the delivery of services and the implementation of projects not only in Cagayan de Oro but elsewhere in the country.

For Cagayan de Oro City alone, the creation of new cities would mean a reduction of the city’s internal revenue allotment by as much as P50 Million, Mayor Emano said.

The city mayor pointed out that a P50 Million reduction from the city’s annual IRA will deprive the city residents of the much needed services and development projects.

Mayor Emano said that should the creation of new cities be approved today, one of the probable effects of the reduction of the city’s IRA is the scrapping of some of the existing benefits enjoyed by city government employees like the monthly rice allowance.

For the other bigger cities like Davao, the latest move of Senate would cost them as much as P200 Million in IRA reduction. (City Information Office)
